      The Patrol Division is under the command of a Lieutenant who also serves as the department’s Night Operations Commander.   Different work shifts provide twenty-four hour coverage.  Twenty-six patrol officers and six sergeants are assigned to this Division.  In addition to regular patrol duties designated officers also perform specialty functions including crime prevention; evidence and property control; coordination of domestic violence and elder abuse investigations; and school-based Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE).  Several officers also maintain instructor certification for specialized in-service training.

     A full-time Traffic Enforcement Unit was added to the Division in 2002 to meet citizen expectations for a more visible police presence in the performance of traffic law enforcement.   The two officers assigned to this unit also serve as liaisons to the Town’s Road Safety Task Force, a citizen’s committee appointed to study traffic safety issues on town roadways.    The department also utilizes a Motorcycle Unit to assist with traffic control and speed zone enforcement.

     A Bicycle Patrol Unit is used for seasonal patrols of beaches, recreation areas and school grounds.  The unit is also used for directed patrol in residential and commercial areas as needed. 

     Dispatch Operations are assigned to the patrol division.  Four civilian emergency telecommunications operators handle police dispatch and call-taking responsibilities, augmented by patrol staff and seasonal police cadet positions.  The department is the community’s 24-hour answering point for 9-1-1calls.  Rescue and fire calls are transferred to the fire department.
