Chief Michael Whalen announced that on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, members of the Dennis, Brewster, Chatham, Yarmouth and Barnstable Police Departments along with a member of the State Police CPAC Unit, executed a search warrant at 22 Chase Avenue in West Dennis. The search warrant was the result of an ongoing investigation into the burglary of the Eden Hand Art Gallery in North Dennis in June 2004.
Following the Eden Hand burglary in June, other Cape towns experienced a series of larcenies and burglaries. In response to this crime spree, investigators from the various Cape towns met to coordinate their investigations. This regional effort has culminated in the investigative activity reported over the last 2 days. Search warrants have been executed in Dennis and Barnstable and have resulted in the recovery of stolen items from numerous burglaries and robberies in Cape Cod and stretching out to Fort Wayne Indiana.
The following persons have been arrested and additional charges are pending:
1. George L. Upton – 52 years old – Hyannis
2. Jason Sylvester – 26 years old – West Dennis
3. Sarah Senno – 24 years old – West Dennis
4. Mark Fornal – 41 years old – Hyannis
While the search warrants are a major milestone in this long- term investigation, our work is by no means over. Investigators from the various departments, working in concert with the District Attorney’s office will continue the investigation, reviewing reports and evidence to identify additional crimes that have been committed by this criminal group.
I would like to commend the members of the Dennis Police Department for their excellent work in solving the burglary at Eden’s. However I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that this was a major regional effort by officers from multiple agencies. This case illustrates the importance of working together. Criminal enterprises do not honor town boundaries and if we are to be successful in combating these enterprises, we must sustain coordinated efforts across town lines.
